It is important to maintain a healthy body weight to keep health issues at bay. The recent study conducted by researchers from United Kingdom stated that being overweight or underweight can cut down your life expectancy by 4 years. Excess weight can shorten your lifespan.
Many previous studies have proved that being overweight or underweight is associated with many health disorders. For example, if an individual is overweight then he can become a victim of heart attack, diabetes, cancer, and other fatal diseases. Whereas, being underweight has its own set of disorders.
This new study was proposed by researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Researchers claim that it is important to maintain a healthy weight to prevent the risk of death due to different disorders. The results of the study can be seen in the journal The Lancet. This study is based on the data gathered from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink. Also, the database which records the death causes was gathered from the Office of National Statistics mortality.
Various factors like age, sex, alcohol consumption, socioeconomic factors were considered for determining the mortality rate. BMI is calculated based on the individual’s height and weight. During the study it was noticed that overweight men have approximately 4.2 years lower life expectancy. For underweight men, the life expectancy is shortened by 4.3 years and for women, it is 4.5 years.
The BMI calculation is an effective way to determine whether an individual is overweight or underweight. The BMI in the range 20.0 to 24.9 is considered as a Normal BMI which means the person has a healthy weight. BMI can be calculated by dividing weight (in Kg) by square of height (in meters). Also, the BMI calculator is available online for free. It is necessary to maintain a healthy weight to lead a long and healthy life. More research needs to be conducted in this field to establish a link between body weight and its impact on life expectancy.
